SFI continues to provide GeneXpert assay cartridges to the Elista, Kalmykia, Russia, TB Clinic. In June 2019, Ron Haak and Darlene Markovich met with members of the clinic to discuss the status of the disease in the area. Thankfully, it appears that there is steady progress to decrease the incidence of both drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB. Consistent with international goals, they hope to completely eradicate the disease by 2035.
A meeting was also held with staff members from the Blood Center. They reported that the PCR-based instrument that SFI provided in 2017 had performed over 13,000 assays and had identified 22 cases of diseases-tainted blood.
